Hospital Introduces Night Shift Food Delivery

Thanks to the Heritage Valley Health System’s foodservice management company, Cura Hospitality, the midnight shift staff can now get deliveries of freshly made meals ranging from breakfasts to lunch and dinner type items.  Cura is using its status as a unit of the Eat’n Park Restaurants organization to make the items available off the commercial chain’s menu through a program called Night Smiles.  The service lets employees working the 11pm- 7am shift place orders by 1am for delivery by 2am.  Selections range from the Eat’n Park chain’s proprietary breakfast menus, including hot items, as well as appetizers, dinners, sandwiches, burgers and salads.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels

Napa Valley College, like many other institutions, was looking for a way to budget their campus dining and found a solution with food trucks.  NVC has been outsourcing management of its cafeteria to a series of contract operators but because of a subsidization clause and the school’s responsibility for maintenance of facilities and equipment, it was a money-losing proposition.  After noticing the surge in food truck operations, the school launched a program at the beginning of the current school year.  Participating trucks rotate around campus from 11am to 2pm, with six onsite each day.  The trucks each pay the school $50 a day to operate on campus and the rotation allows the campus to have day-to-day variety.  The reaction so far has ben nothing but positive.

SNA Reports Progress on Nutrition Goals

A national survey of school foodservice directors shows that students heading back to school this fall will find more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain options and locally grown foods in school cafeterias.  The School Nutrition Association (SNA) School Nutrition Operations Report: The State of School Nutrition 2011 finds that almost 70% of the 1,294 directors surveyed are considering implementing recently proposed nutrition standards for school meals, which require more of the healthy options listed above, to be their top concern.
